Field Notes is where I post short, observational pieces about the week behind me—work, home, heritage, and whatever else insists on being noticed.
Back in November, I set a goal for myself to get a pair of skates and finally learn to stop on ice by winter’s end. After many weeks of practice, I had accomplished that and started working on my balance and maneuvering around. So I decided to chase the next goal in my skating journey; play some ice hockey for the first time!
I’ve got a stick and gloves on the cheap and just need a helmet to get out there and play some shinny sometime soon. Typically I’m adversed to buying new junk unless I use it but I think I been pretty motivated to justify the equipment. For now, it’s all sitting near my desk until my official debut happens, much to my wife’s chagrin. She fears that I’ll get hurt but that would add to the fun of it all! Haha 🙂
My wife, she avoids risky behaviour and likes pretty things, and aside from cooking and dressing up brides on the weekend, she enjoys decorating our house with trinkets and furniture. I don’t mind since it makes the space feel like home and she’s really good at it. However, as of late, Facebook marketplace has been very tempting for all sorts of great finds, which is what enticed her to get a new feature piece; a gold trimmed shelving unit with glass trays. This thing was so big I had to rent a cargo van and decided to coordinate an antique haul to make all worth while. Which in the end it was, now that I have a new chest freezer and standing wardrobe.
Those new digs were enough to satisfy me for my birthday last week. I’m now two years shy of the big 4-0. I didn’t do much to celebrate other than a two-can-dine special at Swiss Chalet and going to the cinema over the weekend. Marty Supreme was an entertaining time piece about a smooth talking, scamming shoe salesman with a great talent for table tennis. The Safdie brothers have a great skill of building tension on screen. Good art like that can often encourage a stride in my creative writing.
I’m workshopping a few stories that I will be pitching to some publications sometime soon. It feels like I’m juggling a lot on paper, but my writing habits strike when elicited and it cannot be forced otherwise. That being said, I will get them done, and hopefully my upcoming trip to Portugal will provide some good quiet time to hunker down and do it.
Still, life remains busy as ever.
By the end of the week, I was reminded that giving new life to old things is just as fulfilling as ever, realized my inherited Portuguese generational fatalism might just be a case of cherophobia, and smash burgers are forever my favourite food.
