Field Notes. #1

To sharpen my flash writing muscles, I’m committing to posting short journal entries about recent happenings—anything and everything. This is the first of the year.

Field Notes.

Fragments from a Portuguese descendant learning where he stands

After a rush of hosting parties over the Christmas holidays, including a friendmas and a Christmas Eve for the family (all within a five day period), I was relieved to attend a party hosted by someone else on New Year’s Eve. Cousin Kate did the duties, hosting an intimate affair in her vacant home, as her parents were traveling far away. And I must say it was a lot of fun!

I soaked in an hour long hot tub session then sprinted across the cold backyard to return to the indoor setting, making it just in time for midnight to ring in the new year with a kiss from Ashley. The party went late into the night, with enough Jell-O shots and alcohol to tranquillize a horse, if not for the the great abundance of food to dampen the affects. Still, the following day was quite a struggle for most of us. Dim sum saved us, restoring just enough energy to sink back into the couch and let the day drift by.

We mostly vegged out on the couch until evening, when I got the itch to go for a skate. The only open ice was the outdoor skating trail in my neighbourhood, where the cold felt like a thousand knives blowing in from the lake. I lasted about twenty minutes before calling it.

After that, I headed home and mentally prepared myself for the oddity of a Friday workday following a statutory holiday. Thankfully, the weekend arrived soon after—and it was just as restorative. There were cozy hours at home with the fireplace lit, a bit of retail therapy, and more skating.

By the end of the week, we had acquired a few new antiques for the house, absorbed a significant car repair bill to replace an alternator, and developed a newfound obsession with music from Griselda Records.

Field Notes is where I post short, observational pieces about the week behind me—work, home, heritage, and whatever else insists on being noticed.
