My Big Fat Portuguese Wedding

We were invited to a wedding where we didn’t even know the bride or the groom. It was a party where everyone was welcome; it was My Big Fat Portuguese Wedding.

This event celebrates all the traditions and quirky nuances of attending a classic Portuguese wedding, following the familiar cultural format many of us grew up hearing about or experiencing firsthand. It’s packed with nostalgic callbacks to family stories and unforgettable characters, all delivered with a humorous twist that makes for a great night out.

Attending truly feels like a family reunion, even though you may not know anyone other than the people you arrived with. A lively cast takes the stage and the wedding itself becomes the show, while guests are served a three-course meal and witness the hilarious sequence of events unfold. Throughout the evening, the audience becomes part of the experience through interactive moments and playful crowd work.

The night begins with the MC warming up the room with punchy jokes as guests settle in with new friends at their tables. One by one, members of the cast make their grand entrances before gathering on stage for the ceremony. A priest leads the couple through their vows, but, as expected, the solemnity quickly gives way to comedic chaos before the bride and groom finally share their kiss.

After the ceremony, the cast mingles with the audience, visiting tables the way family members typically would at a real wedding. Following some lively banter and the second course, the show continues on stage with the bridal party speeches. By the time dessert arrives, fittingly, a pastel de nata for everyone, the room is buzzing, drinks are flowing, and the wedding games begin.

Volunteers from the audience step up to participate, creating some truly hilarious moments. The laughter continues as someone from each table is encouraged to get the party started. Soon enough the dance floor fills up, with classic wedding staples like the conga line and the chicken dance bringing everyone together.

In many ways, it feels just like attending a wedding from back in the day, complete with all the ridiculous and lovable moments we still laugh about. It’s a simple but brilliant concept, and one that proves incredibly entertaining.

The Portuguese Kids, the creators behind the event, were inspired by similar cultural experiences produced by other communities. Drawing a playful nod from the popular film My Big Fat Greek Wedding, they wondered why the Portuguese didn’t have their own version. That question ultimately sparked the idea for My Big Fat Portuguese Wedding, an experience created for the community, by the community, and one that proudly delivers a night full of laughs, food, and cultural celebration.
