Reintroducing Myself: Five Years Writing Our Portuguese Story

Many years ago, my first article was published in Senso Magazine, a local Portuguese magazine that is still in print, which was the moment that truly sparked my journey into creative nonfiction.

This Portuguese thing of ours has always shaped who I am. It’s the backbone of my identity. But it’s in trying to unpack what that really means — the culture, the history, the emotion behind it — that my creativity found its rhythm. My writing continues to explore that question, turning it over and over, searching for clarity and connection.

Since that first publication, I’ve had the privilege of seeing my work appear in literary journals, health magazines, and cultural newspapers. I’ve also self-published some books — something I once only imagined doing.

To everyone who has read my words and found a piece of themselves in my experiences, thank you. I’m incredibly proud to share this Portuguese story of ours, and I’m grateful you’re on the journey with me.

For those of you who may be new to the blog, let me reintroduce myself:

My name is Devin Meireles—Born and raised in Toronto around the Portuguese diaspora. Living by the lake with my wife and dog.

Big fan of Saramago (in English, I confess) and living out on Canada’s west coast; looking forward to your observations.

Many thanks! Saramago and Pessoa are timeless Portuguese writers. I also prefer to read in English, that being my first language. Cheers
