Madeira Travel Journal

I’ve returned to the island, and at this point I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve been to Madeira. While some things have changed—as they must, to evolve and adapt—the feeling of being here is exactly the same. Undoubtedly, this remains my happy place.

We started by revisiting our favourite spots and indulging in local flavours, including a generous amount of poncha. Ashley and I are happiest wandering the city centre or taking road trips in search of new views and memorable meals. We were especially delighted to stumble upon a few antique shops this time around. Along the way, we’ve reconnected with friends, recognized familiar faces, and made room for new connections. This place truly offers something for everyone.

With Carnival approaching this weekend, there’s a palpable sense of anticipation in the air. The city is buzzing—preparations underway, dancers rehearsing, samba bands spilling into public spaces. My camera has been working overtime, capturing hundreds of photos and videos, and I’ve been writing whenever I can. Still, there’s a certain priority placed on simply being present and enjoying the time we have here. For now, here are a few highlights from the week that was.
