Being Kinder To Myself (200 Words or Less)

Just like that it, the summer has passed and the season fall changes the immediate future. Usually, I’m pretty good at handling change however there’s always that shock that’s jolting as if you weren’t expecting it to come. As great as the summer was, there were things that could’ve been better. My therapist says I’m a fortune telling pessimist, always look for the cracks. At least that’s how I heard it. She also suggests I keep a list of my recent achievements, as a reminder of how good I am doing. I can be very hard on myself, so I thought about it, and in the last 12 months I can think of; a new home purchase; strengthening family ties; operating a new business; hosting friends from Portugal and; making a bold choice in what parenthood will look like for my wife and I. All things considered that’s not bad so I’m looking forward to what this list will look like in the next 12 months.

Devin, you have done quite a bit this year-all important things judging by your list. But the kindest thing you can do for yourself is accept that you are doing the best you can, even if it’s never going to feel like it’s enough. It’s the striving and reaching out to all that life offers you that’s important. And to be at peace in the knowledge that you are doing what you can to take care of yourself, cracks and all. It’s good enough.
