Azores Parkette In Little Portugal

New Parkette on Dundas Street West Will Commemorate the Azorean-Canadian Community

PRESS RELEASE

TORONTO, ON – The inauguration of Azores Parkette will be a tribute to the Portuguese and the first of its kind in the City of Toronto. This new public space will be dedicated to the celebration of Azorean-Canadian heritage and the cultivation of community.

Unveiling on Dundas Street West, in the historic neighbourhood of Little Portugal, Azores Parkette promises to be a meaningful and aesthetically enriching addition to the city. It will stand as a testament to the invaluable contributions of Azorean-Canadian immigrants, in commemoration of the spirit of those first pioneers who bravely journeyed to Canada and laid the foundation for the vibrant community we recognize today.

The project is envisioned as a dedicated public space for gathering, personal reflection, and cultural celebration. The design of the parkette will thoughtfully reflect the beauty and spirit of the Azores islands featuring;

  • An impactful mural that offers a visual narrative of the emigration experience.
  • Memorial seating that families can dedicate benches in honour of their loved ones.
  • Vibrant hydrangeas that will introduce seasonal colour and vitality to the square, symbolizing the natural allure of the Azores.

Azores Parkette will add a distinctive artistic dimension to the space. It promises to be a cherished landmark in Toronto, fostering a sense of belonging and pride for generations to come.

Join us for the official opening of the Parkette that will include; a ribbon cutting ceremony, an introduction to the mural artist, speeches from local government officials and special guests from the Azores.

      Interesting. I was not aware there was an Azores -Canada connection. Azores is on my bucket list.

        Yes indeed there is! There are nearly a half million Azorean immigrants and descendants in the greater Toronto area alone.
