Madeira is a popular island preceded by over six hundred years of Portuguese history. For tourists visiting with a limited time, the best way to discover that rich history can be with a free walking tour. Many destination cities offer something similar, so when I found Funchal Free Walking Tours, I booked online and the website was easy to navigate.
On the day of my walking tour, it was easy to find the meeting spot. During the experience, it was very informative and easy to follow. In a matter of 2-3 hours, I heard about the fascinating stories behind monuments, statues and buildings with Madeiran heritage.
Although it is free, the tour guide relies on the gratitude of their attendees and tips are encouraged, whatever you feel is merited. I thought they did really well and contributed a good amount for their effort. I highly recommend them as an economical option to explore the city.
