This was the first flag of the Portuguese Empire from 1095-1143, a blue throughout cross on a white (or silver) background.

The heraldic banner of King Afonso Henriques added silver nails in five distinct areas and was used from 1143-1185. The flag later evolved when King Sancho I changed the design to five eschutcheons (small shields) blue arranged in a cross (the ones in the sides pointing to the center, the other three pointing downwards), each charged with 11 silver circles. These five eschutcheons (quinas) are said to represent the five wounds of Christ (hands, feet and chest).
