Unpopular Opinion: Dundas West Is Too Cool For Customer Service

Dundas West Is Too Cool For Customer Service

It was nearly twenty minutes since we were seated, and still, nobody tended to our table. The wait for a table was long enough yet there was seemingly another queue to get some water and meet our server. Then, maybe, at some point, for heaven’s sakes, placing an order.

The quality of service really turned for the worst there, so much so that adjacent restaurants and bars in the vicinity seemingly were infected with the same passivity. The standard had dropped. Hello, thank you, pay me now. Dining out on Dundas West has become an unfavourable area for customer service.

Since being announced, some years ago, as one of the coolest neighborhoods in the world, it seems to me that the clout has gone straight to the heads of those behind the taps. No more is the precedence to provide a worthwhile night out to the guests but rather take for granted those that show up. They’re so cool that they don’t need you to come back.

RE: tipping culture, I agree that it’s become absurd. I understood why we had it when the minimum wage for serving jobs was less than the general minimum wage in Ontario, but that’s not the case anymore, to my knowledge. Yes, minimum wage is still below living wage. That is problematic. But the cultural norm of tipping is so deeply ingrained that it feels wrong to not, even when the service itself is lacklustre or worse. I couldn’t believe it the first time I was handed the machine in a Starbucks drive-thru and told it was going to ask me “a question.” Tipping for drive-thru service? I mean, I do it, usually, because it feels rude not to. And it’s not that I don’t think the person working drive-thru is working just as hard as the person working the counter or that I take for granted being able to afford to splurge on a coffee or meal out now and then. It’s just . . . I don’t know. On the other hand, anyone who serves or has served the public day-in, day-out knows what a slog it can be – and to provide friendly service despite having to interact with the most curmudgeonly among us deserves compensation.

So unfortunate that this is happening. One of the many more reasons we don’t choose Toronto as one of our outings.

Don’t get me wrong, there are some great places for a night out in Toronto but there are certain areas that seem to take their customers for granted. This has been my experience too many times on Dundas West unfortunately. However exploring outside the city you will find lots of great spots with great food and people, especially in the smaller townships. I don’t blame you for choosing elsewhere.
