Manuel De Lima Meireles is the featured main character in my book, The Portuguese Immigrant: Atlantic Heritage Story.

He was my paternal grandfather, born in Sao Miguel Island on 7 February 1921. He was raised in the westernmost point of the island, in the town of Ginetes. According to ancestral records, the Meireles family had lived there for many generations until his mother moved the clan to the capital city, Ponta Delgada.
Later in life, he emigrated to Canada in the late 1950s and worked hard to bring the rest of the family over. They lived in Kensington Market, in Toronto, for many years before moving to a quaint bungalow in Leslieville. My Avô was the most honest person I’ve ever known. He did not say much, but when he spoke you knew what was what. He was an honourable man and the example that he set shaped our family.
He lived a life worth writing about so I wrote his biography to commemorate that and to share with the Portuguese community. Read more about his life in my narrative nonfiction novel, The Portuguese Immigrant: Atlantic Heritage Story.
