Home Video footage from the 1987 Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres parade in Ponta Delgada, São Miguel.
More details of the event from this excerpt from The Portuguese Immigrant: Atlantic Heritage Story:
“The peak seasons have always been during popular festivals when the hotels reached full capacity. The biggest of which was for the patron saint of Ponta Delgada, Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres. Every year, the veneration parades a wooden image of Jesus Christ through the streets. It has a gaze of serenity, with a crown of thorns on its head, made by an unknown artist. Believers go on exhausting pilgrimages as a testament of their faith, even walking on their knees around the convent with their promessa (promise). Thousands of Azoreans flocked back to pay their respect and participate. To this day, these traditions are the oldest and most religious carried out in Portugal.”
