The Window (Writing Prompt)

The window has a striking view.

From the ninth floor stairwell overlooking the neighbouring counterparts, more red bricks, the ones that formerly built the city, still stand as a living testament to another place in time.

Wedged between an old age home and an apartment building, the tower can be seen in the distance. That’s the compass that directs the city movement. The tower that reached new heights.

The view encapsulates a snapshot of Old Toronto and the renaissance of the later twentieth century. Before the glass construction of the new millennium, those red bricks laid the groundwork for a city about to boom. Those red bricks observed the transformation from a safe distance until their time comes too.

This window is a portal, a screenshot of history. Beholding remnants of Hog Town clinging to The Six. Just like that tower, reflecting off the neighbouring glass structures, it captures a moment in time. The view is an apparition of days gone.

The paint peels off the window framing as the corrosion fans out like mitosis. The view is phenomenal while it lasts.

I’ve taken a liking to Toronto on our past visits observing both new and old.

It’s a wonderful contrast to observe. Some city spots have amazing views that capture old and new architecture in the same view.

I’ve never been to Toronto. Passed through on the way back to NB one year – where I was living at the time. We did visit Niagara a few years back and I could see TO across the Lake. I figure that’s about as close I get in this lifetime. Unless the Leafs come to town. I get around, but … not everywhere.

It’s certainly worth a trip but depending on what you’re looking for in a vacation and budget, there are a lot of better places to see. I’m particularly fascinated with the changing structures across the city as I was raised in a different time and see the city in another light. For the Torontonians of the future, they wouldn’t recognize what I was brought up around. Nonetheless, Toronto is beautiful. Thanks for your comment!
